Library Hours on Sunday to Change

Effective Sunday, Nov. 4, and continuing through the remainder of Autumn Quarter, the Law Library will close at 6pm instead of 11pm. A decision will be made in December about whether the 6pm closure will remain in effect.

Also, another bank of study carrels on the southwest end of Floor L1 will be reserved for use by UW law students. Students: if you cannot find an unoccupied carrel in this area and notice a nonlaw student in one of the units, you may politely ask the nonlaw student to move to another location. For example, all of the seating on Floor L2 is unrestricted.

I have used the the Gallagher library every Sunday night for a couple of years. Many students use the library all the way up to the 11pm closing time each Sunday, so I am sad that the library will now close at 6pm. The hours for library access are already severely restricted on Friday and Saturday evenings. I understand that cuts are being made, but library access is an essential aspect of the university that should not be cut further. I and encourage you to restore the original hours.

Hello! As a UW undergraduate who also works part-time, I rely on evenings and nights to study. The Gallagher Law Library has always provided me a tranquil and focused study environment for those late nights where my own desk at home would be filled with distractions. I am so sad that my study environment away from home is going to no longer be available at the time when I've always needed it the most. Please consider restoring the original Gallagher Law Library hours. Thank you for your time and consideration!

It's really important that students have a library where they can study late at night, especially on Sundays when most students are doing homework. Both Gallagher and Paccar libraries are packed on Sunday nights, so where will students now go after 6pm? Especially right now when Odegaard is under construction and already limited in space. Spaces for studying and working should be provided, not taken away!

The Law Library is a great place to study at night because of the quiet and focused atmosphere. It would be unfortunate if all of the students who use it to study had to move to inferior locations for late night studying. Please keep the library open past 6pm.

I value highly the the Sunday evening hours of the Law Library, given especially that excusing the ruinously echoing Suzallo Reading Room, the Law Library is the only quiet working space on campus at that time. It also provides a unique spatial environment in regards to the table structure, which works exceptionally well for me. In regards to Sunday night in particular, it is among my most valuable working time, and I rely on the Law Library to be open at this time. I sincerely hope this decision will be reconsidered.

I hope that the new hours are only a temporary change. Shortened hours will surely affect the studying habits of students like myself who value a quiet and safe place to study.
